Mino ware is a type of pottery that began in the Momoyama period, flourishing alongside the rise of the tea ceremony. It is mainly produced in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture. It was especially beloved by tea masters during the Momoyama period, the origin of Japan’s “wabi-sabi” aesthetic. Representative glazes of Mino ware include the elegant pale yellow “Ki-Seto,” the glossy jet-black “Seto-Guro,” the milky white “Shino” reminiscent of soft skin, and the uniquely green-patterned “Oribe,” which is particularly distinctive to Mino ware. Today, Mino ware accounts for over half of all porcelain tableware production in Japan.
