Mino ware is a type of pottery that began during the Momoyama period, along with the rise of "chanoyu" (the Japanese tea ceremony). It is produced mainly in the Toki city area of Gifu Prefecture. It has been particularly loved by tea masters active during the Momoyama period, which is when Japan’s "wabi-sabi" culture began to flourish. Representative colors of Mino ware include the elegant pale yellow "Kizeto," the lustrous jet black "Setoguro," the milky white "Shino ware" reminiscent of soft skin, and the rare green designs unique to Mino ware, known as "Oribe ware." Today, Mino ware accounts for more than half of Japan's domestic production of porcelain tableware.
