Mino ware originated during the Momoyama period, flourishing alongside the rise of the Japanese tea ceremony. It has been produced mainly in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, and was especially favored by tea masters who shaped Japan’s wabi-sabi aesthetic. Notable styles of Mino ware include the elegant pale yellow of Kizeto, the glossy black of Setoguro, the soft milky white of Shino ware, and the uniquely green-accented Oribe ware. Today, Mino ware accounts for more than half of Japan’s domestic porcelain tableware production.
