Mino ware originated in the Momoyama period, during the rise of the Japanese tea ceremony, and is primarily produced in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture. It was especially beloved by tea masters who shaped the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, Japan’s distinctive sense of beauty that values imperfection and transience. Representative styles of Mino ware include the elegant pale yellow of Kizeto, the lustrous black of Setoguro, the soft milky white of Shino ware, and the uniquely green-accented Oribe ware. Today, Mino ware accounts for over half of Japan’s domestic porcelain tableware production.
